How Do I Correct an Error on My Green Card, Receipt Notice, Naturalization Certificate, Etc.?

You've waited months, maybe even years, to finally receive your green card in the mail, and as you look it over, you notice that your name is misspelled or maybe your birthday is incorrect . . . the nerve! Luckily, you don't have to worry because USCIS has created an online tool for addressing exactly this issue and more. This tool, known as eRequest, can be used to make case specific inquiries, as well as correct any typographic errors on any of the following documents/cards:

  • Receipt Notices

  • Approval Notices

  • Biometrics Appointment Notices

  • Interview Notices

  • Permanent Resident Cards

  • Employment Authorization Card (EAD)

  • Naturalization Certificate

  • Citizenship Certificate

  • Refugee Travel Document

  • Re-Entry Permit

  • Advance Parole Document

  • Combo Card (EAD + Advance Parole - No longer issued after April 2022)

In order to complete a request on eRequest, you will need some basic information regarding your case, including your Receipt Number, the date the case was filed, contact information and mailing address for the Applicant or Petitioner, who filed the case and finally, details pertaining to the error and what corrections need to be made. Once you submit the request, you can typically expect to wait anywhere between 30 - 45 days, or longer, to receive the corrected document in the mail.
